The building of the Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly Beceiro, '20 Fenchurch Street' - that Londoners have given the nickname 'Walkie Talkie'-was named the winner of Building Design magazine's Carbuncle Cup, for the worst new building in Britain.
The award is given annually by the Building Design magazine and the committee announced that despite the many nominations, this year the creation of the Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly Beceiro is awarded.
The first objections expressed in 2006 when the first plans were unveiled.
After the completion of the construction, the problems started. In 2013, it was given the nickname 'Walkie Scorchie', due to the fact that the concave glass surface, sometimes gathers the sun's rays and melt parts of parked car nearby. Also, due to its concave surface, downhill wind waves lie down on the sidewalk unsuspecting passersby.
The garden of the building was originally presented as to be freely accessible to Londoners and visitors with ferns and trees.
The final result was a collection of expensive restaurants and bars with a limited public space in between.
The City of London Corporation announced that it will order a large-scale revision of the area, so as to be closer to the version that they finally adopted. Even though, nothing seems to be able to salvage the reputation of '20 Fenchurch Street'.
