Three stonemasons died when a section of the ancient walls surrounding the Old City of Kairouan in Tunisia collapsed on Saturday. In addition, two individuals were injured in the incident, suffering fractures. Reports indicate that a 30-meter section of the wall, located near the Gate of the Floggers, crumbled.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the tragedy, linking the collapse to recent heavy rainfalls. Moez Tria, a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department, mentioned that a restricted area has been established to prevent people from walking beneath the compromised section of the wall, which still poses a risk of further collapse.
Founded in 670 AD, Kairouan holds significant historical importance as one of North Africa's holiest cities. It served as the capital of the Muslim world in North Africa for four centuries until Tunis was designated as Tunisia's political capital in the 12th century. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, Kairouan features landmarks like the Mosque of the Three Doors, renowned as the oldest mosque with a sculpted facade. UNESCO describes this mosque as an "architectural masterpiece" that influenced the design of several other mosques in the Maghreb region.
