On the 1st of August, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck Italy at the southern Calabria region. The epicenter of the earthquake, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, was 3km west of Pietrapaola in Cosenza province, near the Ionian Sea while the depth was approximately 21km. As of present and according to fire department officials’ statement, no damage or injuries were reported. However, they are conducting thorough inspections to ensure public safety.
In addition, the mayor of Pietrapaola Manuela Labonia, stated that the area was experiencing minor tremors the last days and hence they were monitoring the area for stronger earthquake events. She added that after the 5.0 magnitude quake, many other less powerful tremors followed, causing people to stay outside. However, she said that the situation is under control.
Overall, people on social media reported that they felt the earthquake in Bari, Puglia, which is approximately 250km to the north.
