A historic building collapsed due to wind loading in Riverside on Monday afternoon. Debris resulting from the collapse caused the closure of traffic in Riverside. Although the building, located at 2983 Mission Inn Ave., was not completely collapsed, sections of the unoccupied structure were coming down. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.
The city, communicating via X (formerly Twitter), announced the closure of Mission Inn Ave. for through traffic between Park Ave and Commerce St. until further notice. Currently, there is no provided estimation of when the affected area will be reopened. Due to this fact, the city advises individuals to plan accordingly and seek alternate routes.
According to Riverside spokesperson Phil Pitchford, he received the initial notification about the building damage around 9:20 a.m. The affected structure was damaged in a fire a few years ago and suffered additional impact from strong winds that began at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Monday. Winds in this area were about 40 mph, according to KTLA's Gil Leyvas.
