A construction of a shopping center along the federal highway of Puerto Morelos in Mexico collapsed killing 2 and injuring 14 people on Tuesday 7 of August.
According to reports, the roof gave away not being able to support the excessive weight. The victims were damaged by the collapse of the roof. No one was reported missing. Authorities acted rapidly as Fire and municipal police along with members of the Directorate of Civil Protection participated in the rescue procedures receiving aid from the army, federal police and firefighters of Cancun.
A report from Guillermo Morales López, director of Civil Protection in Puerto Morelos, states that the collapse was caused by a structural calculation failure and the incident will be further investigated in the next days. "Everything indicates that the collapse was that of the metal trabe (beam floor support). It is evident that it was caused by weight, but we will wait for the specialized technical opinion because originally we had the idea of an accumulation of concrete in a single point caused the collapse, but when reviewing the area, we found no evidence of that," Morales López explains.
He also emphasizes on the fact that workers, who were rushing to do the rescue work, had cement on their bodies as the accident occurred during the time concrete was being poured, pointing out that they should track down the director responsible for this situation.
