Authorities reported that the collapse of an apartment building in the northeastern Brazilian city of Olinda caused at least six fatalities. The collapse occurred on Thursday night in the Jardim Atlântico neighborhood at the three-story Leme building, which had been deemed at risk of collapse and had an eviction order in place since 2000.
Among the dead were two women, one man, a 16-year-old girl, and a 13-year-old boy. Furthermore, the collapse left five individuals injured, four of whom were in critical condition and were taken to hospitals in Paulista and Recife. The fifth individual, a 53-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.
Over 100 firefighters and first responders were involved in the search and rescue operation, assisted by sniffer dogs and technicians from Anatel, who used specialized equipment to locate cell phone signals.
