Blast at Bucharest apartment block kills 3, poses risk of collapse

Emergency services in Bucharest responded to a massive explosion at an apartment building that left three people dead and others injured, while raising concerns over possible structural collapse.

The explosion occurred in Sector 5, affecting the fifth and sixth floors of an eight-story residential block on Calea Rahovei. At least 13 people were hospitalized with injuries ranging from burns to trauma.

First responders mobilized rapidly, bringing in 11 fire engines and four mobile intensive care units to the scene. The gas supply in the surrounding area was shut off as a safety measure. Residents were evacuated from the damaged building, and nearby structures were inspected for signs of damage.

Photographs and video from the site show the building’s façade smashed outwards, windows shattered, and debris strewn across the street. Sections of facade from nearby buildings were also affected.

While concrete structural damage was clearly visible, officials have not yet confirmed whether portions of the building are at immediate risk of total collapse. The scope of structural compromise continues to be assessed.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Investigators are examining the possibility of a gas leak or other internal failure, while structural engineers evaluate the integrity of load-bearing elements.
