A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit southern Java in the early hours of Friday, leaving at least 15 people injured and causing damage to dozens of buildings in and around Yogyakarta, officials reported.
The quake struck at 1:06 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located south of Pacitan in East Java, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said. Strong shaking was felt across a wide area, including Bantul Regency in Yogyakarta.
According to the Bantul Disaster Mitigation Agency, early assessments identified damage at 13 sites throughout the regency. Agency head Mujahid Amrudin said reports indicated structural damage and injuries in multiple locations. The earthquake damaged seven houses, two places of worship, a government building, two schools, and a health clinic.
Authorities confirmed that 15 people were injured in the incident. All of them have received medical care and were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Mujahid added that emergency teams are prioritizing assistance for victims, conducting on-site damage evaluations, and closely monitoring the situation for possible aftershocks.
