On Saturday December 21, a four storey-building collapsed in Mohali, Punjab, India resulting in at least two casualties while many others are feared to be trapped beneath the debris. The Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) promptly arrived at the site and started the rescue operations. According to the authorities, the rescue teams had been ongoing for over 17 hours.
The reason for the collapse is not known yet; however, an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact reason that led to the tragic incident. Notably, the authorities suggest that the reason of the collapse might be linked to the unauthorized and illegal excavation that was ongoing nearby. Therefore, law enforcement has opened a case of culpable homicide against the building’s owners.
In all, Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab Chief Minister that has been monitoring the situation shared his condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public that they will take strict action against those responsible.
