Structural behavior concerns the way a structure responds to loads, forces, and/or environmental conditions to which it is subjected. It encompasses how a structure deforms, resists load and interacts with its surroundings. Structural engineers use this understanding to design structures that are safe, functional, and capable of withstanding the loads and conditions they will encounter throughout their service life. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that structural behavior is analyzed using mathematical models, computer simulations and physical testing. Monitoring structural behavior, over time, through methods like Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), ensures that any deviations from expected behavior can be identified and addressed rapidly.
