When the relationship between applied forces and displacements is nonlinear, a nonlinear analysis should be adopted to accurately predict the behavior of a structure or system. Nonlinear effects can arise from a variety of sources, including geometrical nonlinearity, material nonlinearity and contact between surfaces.
When the deformations and/or displacements of a structure become large enough to affect its behavior, the geometric nonlinearity should be included in the analysis. Material nonlinearity occurs when the response of the material to applied forces is nonlinear, e.g. elastoplastic materials. When there is contact between two or more surfaces, and the resulting behavior is nonlinear, contact nonlinearity is introduced to the system. Overall, nonlinear analysis is essential for accurately predicting the behavior of structures and systems when nonlinear effects are present.
