Scientists have observed unusual seismic activity in southern Washington and specifically in the area near Mount Adams. However, they said that there is no reason for concern or alarm. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Mount Adams, that is nestled in the Cascades, about 50 miles from Yakima, typically experiences one earthquake every two or three years.
It is noted that, just in September, six small earthquakes (with magnitudes ranging from 0.9 to 2.0) were recorded. Due to their magnitude, none of the earthquakes were felt at the surface. Furthermore, it is pointed out that these quakes mark the highest monthly total since monitoring began in 1982. Due to a limited network of seismic stations on Mount Adams, the exact depths and locations of the quakes remain unknown, even though neighboring volcanoes, e.g. Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Rainier, are extensively monitored.
Moreover, the USGS mentioned that additional smaller earthquakes have occurred, though seismologists have not been able to pinpoint their locations. To improve detection, the Cascade Volcano Observatory and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network plan to set up temporary seismic stations in the area, which will help track smaller quakes and provide better estimates of their size, location, and depth.
Despite the recent uptick in seismic events, the alert level remains normal, and officials reassure the public there's no immediate threat. While Mount Adams is classified as a "high-threat" volcano due to its history, its last eruption occurred between 3,800 and 7,600 years ago. It is the largest active volcano in Washington by area and volume and the state's second-tallest volcano, surpassed only by Mount Rainier.
