With the aid of BDP, the University of Cambridge is planning the renovation of the Historic Faculty building Grade II which is part of the red trilogy buildings. The building was originally designed by James Stirling, around 1960, and it is known as a post-war architecture monument. As of present, it is hosting the Seelay Library and highlights the “act of reading”.
The primary objective of the building's restoration is to repair and enhance the structure, with the addition of two new pavilions to provide extra library and study spaces. Also, the upgrades will include thermal insulation, carbon-saving and climate-resilient materials. However, the original design will not be changed. It is noted that the upgrades are focused on the environmental impacts of the restoration and hence they will target a BREEAM certification with energy-efficient upgrades and a zero-gas plan. Another aspect that they are targeting is to create spaces that are accessible for everyone with a step-free access strategy. To achieve all the above, they seek consultation for heritage, civil, structural and façade engineering from 2021.
Moreover, the renovation will include an outdoor upgrade to create areas that could promote biodiversity. It should be mentioned that the project is part of the university’s “Reshaping out Estate” program that is targeting the renovation and upgrade of 20th century’s buildings. In all, the construction is planned to start in 2025 after university and Cambridge city council’s approval.
