A section of the medieval Torre dei Conti, located near the Colosseum and the Roman Forum in Rome, partially collapsed on Monday amid ongoing renovation work. According to Italian authorities, one worker was taken to hospital in serious condition and another person remained trapped in the structure following the collapse.
The initial collapse occurred just before noon on November 3, 2025, during planned restoration operations. Emergency services were dispatched immediately; fire crews used mobile ladders and a drone to locate and attempt rescue of the trapped individual. The collapse did not involve bystanders, though the incident happened in a tourist‐heavy area.
In an unsettling development, a second internal failure occurred around 1 p.m., while rescue operations were underway. Debris and dust clouds erupted from the tower’s interior, leading rescuers to temporarily pull back due to increased risk.
The tower dates back to the early 13th century and has faced past structural damage from earthquakes. The current height is approximately 29 meters, though historically the tower was significantly taller.
Authorities have cordoned off the surrounding area, and Rome’s mayor and culture minister visited the site. A formal investigation has been opened by the public prosecutor’s office to determine the causes of the collapse and identify any responsible parties.
As rescue efforts continue, the status of the trapped worker remains uncertain, and structural engineers are assessing the extent of damage and risk of further failure.
