On Friday, May 30, a section of a pedestrian bridge collapsed at Khanewal Junction railway station, resulting in one fatality. Another person was seriously injured and transferred to the hospital for medical treatment. According to officials, rescue teams arrived promptly and initiated rescue operations at the scene.
It was reported that the bridge was over 100 years old and in a state of disrepair. As a result, Hanif Abbasi, the Federal Minister for Railways, suspended three railway officials for negligence in maintaining the structure.
While the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that a stone slab from the bridge fell onto individuals below. Following the completion of rescue efforts, repair work on the collapsed section began. Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways is continuing with its planned Eidul al-Adha special train services.
