Last week, on Sunday 10 November just before 12:00 local time, a strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Cuba, at the eastern coast. The quake affected several areas and caused major damages. The island was already dealing with severe power outages caused by the effects of two recent hurricanes.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was about 39km south of Bartolomé Masó, and the depth was approximately 14 km. The quake was felt in the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Guantánamo, areas recently battered by Hurricane Oscar as far as southern Florida.
Miguel Díaz-Canel, who is the president of Cuba, stated that the quake caused several landslides, downed power lines and damaged buildings. He announced that he ordered authorities to assess the damage and start the recovery operations. In addition, the head of the Cuba’s National Seismological Service, Enrique Diego Arango Arias, stated that the municipality of Pilón affected more from the earthquake and the communication in the region had been severely disrupted. The state-run outlet Cubadebate shared images from Granma Province that shows buildings with cracked walls and debris strewn across the streets.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center stated that, despite the magnitude of the earthquake, no tsunami alert was raised although that there were fears for small waves near the epicenter. In all, witnesses from eastern Cuba stated that the tremor was intense and more powerful than previous earthquakes that they had experienced.
