Dresden, Germany: Carola bridge collapsed, no injuries were reported

On Wednesday September 11, a bridge partially collapsed at Dresden, eastern Germany. Specifically, an approximately 100-meter-long piece of the 1971 Carola Bridge, which connects the historic old town of Dresden with different city areas, collapsed. Authorities stated that tram lines and pedestrian pathways fell over the Elbe River. However, the vehicle lanes remained intact.  Moreover, authorities added that at the time instant of the incident no one was crossing the bridge or was under it, and hence no injuries were reported.

Promptly at the site arrived the fire department alongside rescue teams and experts with the aid of drones to secure the bridge and assess the damage. To secure the area and protect public welfare officials had restricted the area and advised the residents to avoid the bridge because they fear an upcoming further collapse. As of present, the cause of the collapse is not known. However, an investigation is underway. It should be noted that the debris from the bridge damaged two heating pipes. Thus, residents are informed that they will have no hot water for about 24 hours.

The area around the bridge has been cordoned off, and residents have been advised to avoid it due to the risk of further collapse. Michael Klahre, a spokesperson for the fire brigade, mentioned in a social media video that there is still a risk of further collapse.
