- Description
- This work reports the results of an experimental campaign on a type of dry jointed and prestressed masonry. The
campaign is part of a larger project with the main objective of to develop an innovative wall construction system
for economical dwelling in seismic prone areas of underdeveloped countries. The campaign tested 12 stack bond
prisms and 6 regular bond prisms, in order to measure the strength and Young modulus of the material under
axial compression and to observe the failure modes. Six wallets, postensioned in the head joints direction were
tested in order to determine the diagonal compression strength, the shear modulus, and to observe the failure
mode. Under these simple tests, the proposed material behaves adequately; in particular, the shear failure mode
presents a very large displacement capacity.

- Estimating earthquake-induced failure probability and downtime of critical facilities
- K. Porter ; K Ramer
- Book Title / Journal: Journal of Business Continuity and Emergency Planning
- Year: 2012 , Volume: Vol. 5 , Series:
- Earthquake engineering
- Description
- Fault trees have long been used to estimate failure
risk in earthquakes. One interesting application
is that one can assess and manage the
probability that two facilities — a primary and
backup — would be simultaneously rendered
inoperative in a single earthquake. Another is
that one can calculate the probabilistic time
required to restore a facility to functionality, and
the probability that, during any given planning
period, the facility would be rendered inoperative
for any specified duration. A large new peerreviewed
library of component damageability and
repair-time data for the first time enables fault
trees to be used to calculate the seismic risk of
operational failure and downtime for a wide variety
of buildings. With the new library, seismic risk
of both the failure probability and probabilistic
downtime can be assessed and managed, considering
the facility’s unique combination of structural
and non-structural components, their seismic
installation conditions, and the other systems on
which the facility relies. An example is offered of
real computer data centres operated by a
California utility. The fault trees were created and
tested in collaboration with utility operators, and
the failure probability and downtime results validated
in several ways.

- Application of performance based nonlinear seismic design and simulation static pushover analysis for seismic design of RC buildings
- A. Bhatti ; H. Varum
- Book Title / Journal: The 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Lisbon, Portugal, Paper
- Year: 2012 , Volume: , Series:

- Description
- Seismic retrofitting of already constructed buildings is one of the most effective methods of decreasing
the risk. However the seismic performance of the structure may not be improved by Strengthening
unless the professional engineer selects an appropriate modifying technique based on seismic
evaluation of the already constructed structures. In this paper nonlinear static pushover analysis has
been performed for the said building. The demand spectrum of ATC 40 procedure for this building
was compared with real site based demand spectra. The simulation has been compared with and
without strengthened structure. The plastic hinges of the building have been plotted for different safety
margins.

- G. Diaz ; A. Teran-Gilmore ; C. Reyes
- Book Title / Journal: The 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Lisbon, Portugal, Paper
- Year: 2012 , Volume: , Series:
- Earthquake engineering
- Description
- Although an importance factor of 1.5 may promote adequate performance of essential facilities built in firm soil;
the actual value of this factor corresponding to structures built in soft soil exhibits significant dependence with
respect to the dynamic characteristics of the structural system. Because of this, the current use given to the
importance factor may result in conservative or unsafe design of essential facilities built in soft soils. One way to
improve the seismic design of essential facilities is to formulate displacement-based approaches. Within this
context, a displacement-based methodology should aim at controlling simultaneously the level of structural and
non-structural damage by limiting the plastic rotation and inter-story drift demands in the structural system of the
essential facility.

- Book Title / Journal: The 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Lisbon, Portugal, Paper

- Earthquake engineering
- Description
- Since 1973, California has mandated that “hospitals …which must be completely functional to perform
necessary services … after a disaster, shall be designed and constructed to resist, insofar as practical, the forces
generated by earthquakes…” With advances in performance-based design methodologies, nonlinear response
history analysis, and supplemental damping, engineers can better meet this legislated mandate.
This paper describes the analysis of a 94,000 sq. meter, high-rise urban hospital in California using steel moment
resisting frames with supplemental damping devices to control drift. Full-scale test results of Viscous Wall
Dampers and steel beam-column moment resisting connections are used to validate the Non-Linear Response
History analysis assumptions. The building seismic performance is evaluated using 10 strike-slip ground motion
records.
