The construction of an 1100-foot tall multi-use skyscraper is underway in downtown Los Angeles. At 2.1 million square feet and 73 stories tall the Wilshire Grand will be the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. While this is an impressive height, especially for L.A., it is dwarfed, worldwide, by roughly 40 structures. The majority of these buildings, around 34, exist outside of the U.S.
It is evident that the United States no longer puts a premium on height. Twenty five years ago, 80 percent of the world’s tallest buildings were found in the U.S. Currently, only 20 percent reside in America. Also, in 2014, North America constructed only four of the top 20 tallest buildings completed that year.
Thirty years ago few would have guessed that the majority of world’s tallest buildings would not be on U.S. soil. Although, it seemed equally unlikely that they, too, would be constructed of concrete and be used for purposes other than office space.
