Two buldings in Lagos Island, Nigeria were marked for demolition. The two structures include a three-floor building at Odo-Osun Street, and a four-floor building at Evans Street. Lagos State Government decided to act proactively due to the continuing building collapses and loss of life that have taken place across the state.
An enforcement team was formed, involving the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) was established and led by Gbolahan Oki, General Manager at the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA). Gbolahan Oki stated that the agency would not spare any in getting rid of dilapidated buildings and stressed that the agency would increase its efforts to reduce the incidence of building collapse as the rainy season approaches. The demolition took place on Sunday March 14th to avoid additional traffic congestion.
LASPPPA District Officer for Lagos Island, Yemisi Alaka, said that the demolition was decided after an earlier survey and identification of several distressed buildings across the state. She stated that the state government identified some buildings that were about to collapse, and acted proactively to avert any loss of lives. She expressed concern that people were still living in the identified buildings in spite of warnings earlier issued and served to the occupants.Source: TheGuardian Nigeria
