On Thursday, July 17, in London, a pedestrian bridge over the Foša channel—constructed in 2024 within an eight-month period—was honored as the International Bridge Project of the Year at the NCE Bridges Conference & Awards 2025. The bridge is located in the city of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enhances connectivity between Trogir’s old town, the market, the T1 car park, and Fortin Park.
The bridge was constructed using traditional shipbuilding methods in Vranjic, while also incorporating modern technology. It is a 65-tonne steel structure, spanning over 30 meters in length and 10 meters in width. Engineers raised the bridge 4 meters above the channel to allow small boats to pass beneath. The total construction cost exceeded one million euros.
Designed not only as a crossing point but also as a public space, the bridge includes 29 integrated seating areas and hammock-style nets—creating a scenic and relaxing area for both residents and visitors.
Despite its success, the project encountered several challenges during construction. The size and weight of the steel components required precise planning and coordination, and ensuring sufficient clearance for boat traffic added complexity. Additionally, the bridge’s incline raised accessibility concerns for wheelchair users and those with strollers.
The New Civil Engineer publication organized the NCE Awards to celebrate top bridge projects from around the world. Among the entries were bridges from countries including China, France, Germany, Poland, Luxembourg, and Rwanda. Trogir’s bridge stood out for its hyperbolic paraboloid design, offering both visual elegance and structural efficiency—harmonizing beautifully with its protected, historic surroundings.
