A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred on August 18th at 6:10a.m. local time near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was approximately 104km east-southeast of the city and the depth was around 44km beneath the surface.
The tremors were so strong that they were felt from cities that are located up to 125km away, e.g. Yelizovo and Paratunka. Initially, according to the US Tsunami Warning System, they warned that there was the possibility of tsunami occurring within 300km of the epicenter. However, later, after a throughout assessment, the Russian Emergencies Ministry decided not to raise any tsunami warning.
Shortly after, the massive 7.4 earthquake triggered the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano, which is located approximately 450km far from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. According to the officials, the ash column due to the eruption is expected to rise at 8km above sea level while surge of lava was also released. The erupted volcano primarily affected the coast of eastern Russia.
In all, according to the first statements, no major damage or injuries were reported. However, to ensure public safety, the government ruled inspection to the buildings for potential damages, emphasizing on social facilities.
