A huge milestone for the construction sector in Europe was completed last February with the inauguration of the largest 3D printed building by the city of Heidelberg with the aid of PERI 3D construction and KRAUSGRUPP. The building will be used as a data center in Heidelberg.
The Wave House, as it is called, is a 600m2 building with 54m in length, 11m in width and 9m in height and in contrast to usual buildings that are used as data centers with no windows and openings for safety reasons, this structure has a unique design that is more appealing and more adapted to the other city buildings. The architectures SSV and Mense Korte designed the building highlighting its look, with main goal to be aesthetically appealing while they incorporate the capability of the 3D printer to create wave-designed walls.
The manager of PERI 3D Construction stated that the companies achieved to complete the project on the agreed date despite all the obstacles they faced due to scale and the unique shape of the building. He also stated that they used the BOD2 printer from COBOD International company and managed to print the walls in 140 hours, decreasing simultaneously the total cost of the project. In addition, the manager of COBOD International Henrik Lund-Nielsen emphasized that Wave-House reflects the potential of his company’s technology to deliver complex structures, including office spaces, warehouses, and data centers.
In all, a ceremony attended by all the involved parties was held in February as a celebration of this achievement during which they handed over the keys of the building to the IT Heidelberg, which are the new owners.
