The fifth phase for the Reading's South Reading Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme took place on November 23, with the installation of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Kennet. For this purpose, the A33 Relief Road was closed overnight, specifically from 6p.m. until 9a.m. the following day. The second phase is scheduled to begin on Saturday, November 30.
The fifth phase began in March and is anticipated to be completed in 2025 as part of Reading’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, with a total budget of £26 million funded by the Department for Transport. The main goal of the project is to streamline bus services along the A33 by bypassing traffic congestion. Upon completion, the project will provide new bus lanes north and south of the Rose Kiln Lane (North) junction, connecting to existing lanes and additional bus stops to enhance public transport access to Reading Link Retail Park and nearby businesses.
The bridge is a 53-tonne structure with 47 meters length and 5 meters width. Due to its dimensions and weight, the bridge will be transported in two sections, assembled on-site, and lifted into place using two cranes. Notably, the project is significant as it enhances infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists while enabling an extended bus lane without reducing space for general traffic.
The main contractor, GRAHAM, confirmed that during last Saturday's scheduled closure, the public was directed to use a signed diversion route through Bennet Road, Basingstoke Road, Southampton Street/Whitley Street, and the IDR (A329). Additionally, John Ennis, the lead councilor for Climate Strategy and Transport, emphasized the project's importance, highlighting its role in improving facilities for cyclists and pedestrians while integrating bus lanes without disrupting general traffic flow
Overall, the BRT scheme aligns with the Council’s efforts to promote public transportation, cycling, and walking to minimize traffic congestion and improve environmental factors that impact the health and well-being of Reading’s population.
