UDOT launches reconstruction of University Avenue Bridge in Provo

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced that starting October 1, 2025, it will begin replacing the University Avenue (U.S. Route 189) bridge in Provo. The current bridge is being replaced with a new structure designed to better serve a mix of users: motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and the community at large.

The new design will feature two lanes in each direction, dedicated six-foot bike lanes on both sides, wider eight-foot sidewalks, and a 12-foot multi-use trail on the west side connecting between 500 South and 600 South. To improve visibility and safety, the replacement will include improved sight lines and a protective fence (10 feet tall) over railroad tracks traversing beneath the bridge.

Initial work in October will not yet affect traffic. Instead, crews will prep and stage demolition work. Later in the month, demolition of the west side of the bridge is scheduled to begin. To maintain traffic flow, one lane in each direction will remain open during daytime hours.

The project is planned in two phases over approximately two years:

• Phase 1 (starting fall 2025): demolition and reconstruction of the west side.
• Phase 2 (after spring 2026): work shifts to the east side, anticipated to continue through fall 2027.
