Car-free living in Helsinki: new bridge puts bikes and pedestrians first

In a newly developed district of Helsinki, a new bridge has been introduced to support pedestrian and cycling mobility. The 1.2-kilometer Kruunuvuorensilta connects the island of Laajasalo to the city center and opened on April 18 for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, with tram services planned to follow. Private vehicles are not permitted to use the bridge, requiring drivers to use alternative routes.

The bridge serves a growing residential area on Laajasalo, where former industrial land has been redeveloped for housing. Urban planning strategies for the area have focused on connecting it to the city center while limiting additional road traffic and prioritizing walking, cycling, and public transport.

The bridge includes separate pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. Its alignment incorporates a gentle curve, and rest areas with seating have been installed along the route. The pathway is maintained during winter conditions through regular snow clearance, and it connects to the wider cycling network and nearby islands.

The project forms part of broader efforts to reduce car dependency and transport-related emissions. Reduced parking availability in the area has contributed to increased use of alternative modes of transport. Authorities have stated that the objective is to support sustainable mobility options within the district.
