On Tuesday, June 18th, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook Kashmar in Razavi Khorasan province, northeastern Iran. According to scientists, the epicenter of the quake was approximately 5km from Moghan, Razavi Khorasan Province, and it had a depth of 6km. Unfortunately, the Governor of Kashmar reported that so far, four people have lost their lives, and 120 have been injured.
In addition, local authorities reported that the earthquake damaged several historical buildings in Kashmar. Following the tremor, an immediate assessment revealed large cracks and partial collapses in some structures, including the Jameh Mosque of Kashmar, Haj Sultan Ulama Madrasa, and Haji Jalal Mosque.
These sites, known for their rich cultural heritage and historical architecture, hold significant cultural value and attract tourists. A detailed evaluation of the damage will be conducted to determine the full extent of the impact on these culturally important sites. Nonetheless, the damages underscore the urgent need for preservation and restoration efforts to safeguard Kashmar's historical legacy.
It should be noted that Iran frequently experiences significant seismic activity due to its geographical position. According to UN reports, Iran averages approximately 10,000 earthquakes annually.
