Images have emerged of the Danjiang Bridge in Taiwan, a major new infrastructure project that is being hailed as the world’s longest single-tower cable-stayed bridge. The bridge’s cost is estimated at NT$12.49 billion (around £295 million) and is expected to open to the public on May 12, 2026. Once completed, it will stand as a prominent new landmark spanning the Tamsui River estuary.
The bridge boasts an asymmetric design, with its longest span measuring 450 metres. Its network of cables is supported by a single concrete mast standing 200 metres tall, built to withstand severe weather, earthquakes, and other extreme forces. Recently, construction reached a major milestone with the placement of the final steel deck segment.
Beyond its architectural ambition, the Danjiang Bridge has a practical purpose which is based on easy traffic congestion in northern Taiwan. By connecting major highways on both sides of the river, the structure is expected to take pressure off narrow local roads and reduce traffic on the nearby Guandu Bridge, located five kilometres upstream. Officials estimate that travel between Bali and Tamsui will be shortened by about 15 kilometres, saving drivers roughly 25 minutes.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the bridge was conceived as both functional infrastructure and a sculptural statement. The design team aimed for a slender, elegant mast that would preserve views of the river and sunsets, a key feature of the area. For this purpose, advanced 3D modelling was used to ensure ships could continue to pass safely beneath the bridge while minimising visual disruption along the waterfront.
With the main structure now finished, work will continue on road surfacing, lighting installation, and structural testing. When it opens next year, the Danjiang Bridge will also include dedicated pedestrian and cycling lanes. The project joins a growing list of high-profile developments by Zaha Hadid Architects, including a large football stadium in Xi’an and a village-style leisure complex in Hong Kong.
