After a routine inspection, the footbridge in Wimborne was deemed unsafe, and officials have decided to replace it during this summer. The inspection revealed extensive corrosion beneath the bridge. Authorities stated that, while the structure is currently stable and only requires repairs and maintenance, due to restricted access the best solution is its replacement with a new bridge that will be easier to maintain. The existing bridge will be relocated and reused after proper repair off-site.
The officials released a statement indicating that the bridge had been used daily by students from nearby schools for years without maintenance, prompting the need for repairs. After careful consideration, they decided to replace the old footbridge with a new, modern structure that is easier to manage, aiming to prevent future problems. The new bridge will be constructed from steel and assembled in sections, with adjustments planned for the approach slope. The completion of the bridge is scheduled by the start of the new school term in September.
Furthermore, according to a statement for the protection of the environment around the area, they will trim carefully the vegetation around the bridge to facilitate the removal, while the council’s ecologist team will ensure that all nesting birds will be vacated before the beginning of the project.
