The intersection of Rio is a particularly complex technical project, because it serves many different destinations. In its final form, the road will include three overpasses, six underpasses, two bridges over the river Selemnos and multiple entry-exit ramps. It is estimated to serve an average of 20,000 vehicles daily.

A new bridge will replace the bridge, which was demolished at the end of May, and it will link the Old National Road to the Bridge of Rio. The next step is the demolition and rebuilding of the bridge linking the city of Patras to the Rion-Antirion Bridge.

At this point of intersection, Olympia Odos connects the Peloponnese with Epirus (through the Rio-Antirio Bridge), also it is the main passage to the western Peloponnese (to Pyrgos and Amaliada).

The road serves the access to and from the suburbs of Patras, the Hospital of Rio and the University.
