Two strong earthquakes struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Friday, resulting in multiple fatalities, structural damage, and heightened public alarm. The twin events, occurring hours apart, are being treated by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) as a doublet, i.e. separate but related quakes in the same region.
The first tremor registered at magnitude 7.4, taking place near Manay in Davao Oriental Province. It was detected at a relatively shallow depth, amplifying surface impact. A tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas within approximately 300 km of the epicenter, prompting evacuations.
Several hours later, a second quake of magnitude ~6.8 struck in proximity to the initial event, prompting renewed tsunami alerts and further distress in already shaken regions.
According to regional civil defense authorities, at least seven people were killed across affected municipalities. Reports indicate a combination of causes: falling debris, structural collapse, and shock or panic-related health events.
Emergency teams and local responders commenced search, rescue, and damage assessment operations immediately. In towns like Manay, Davao Oriental, and nearby municipalities, buildings, homes, bridges, and infrastructure showed visible signs of compromise—cracks, partial collapses, and displaced elements.
One notable instance of structural impact is on Magsaysay Bridge in Butuan City, which was reported to have developed cracks or visible damage in the aftermath of the first quake. Authorities in Butuan have temporarily restricted use or closed portions of the bridge pending inspection.
“People living near coastal areas were strongly advised to evacuate immediately to higher ground or move inland,” PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol said, referencing the tsunami warnings that were briefly in effect.
In the hours following the quakes, the tsunami warnings were gradually lifted after preliminary assessments indicated there were no significant wave impacts. Coastal alert status was eased once ocean monitoring revealed no major disturbances.
