A shopping center collapsed on Monday 27th of February 2024, resulting in the death of at least six people. The building, located in southeastern Nigeria at Onitsha city and accommodated more than 120 shops, was constructed in Anambra state.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) mentioned that some of the rescued individuals were taken to the hospitals in Onitsha for urgent medical attention. Moreover, it was added that there might be more people trapped in the debris, and hence efforts are underway to search for survivors.
The cause of the collapse is currently unknown. However, recurring incidents of building collapses in Africa's largest economy remain a significant concern as they are frequent, attributed to lenient regulations and due to poor in quality construction materials.
