A magnitude-5.6 earthquake that struck Turkey's southeast on Monday claimed one life, injured 110 people, and brought down 29 buildings, according to Turkish authorities. It should be underlined that according to AFAD, since February 6 there have been about 10,000 aftershocks in the earthquake-affected area.
Orhan Tatar, general director of AFAD's earthquake and risk reduction division, reported that 45 aftershocks with magnitudes between five and six occurred in the area over the course of the previous three weeks in addition to four new earthquakes. Mr. Tatar declared, "This is very exceptional action."
Yunus Sezer, head of the nation's disaster management agency, AFAD, informed reporters that the earthquake, which had a depth of 6.15 kilometers, was centered near the town of Yesilyurt in the province of Malatya.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that ravaged sections of southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6 also devastated Malatya, one of 11 Turkish provinces. More than 48,000 people died as a result of the earthquake in both nations, while 173,000 buildings in Turkey were destroyed or severely damaged.
In Yesilyurt, a father and daughter who were buried in the debris of a four-story structure were rescued but sustained injuries. To gather their personal belongings, the two had gone inside the ruined structure.
In other parts of Malatya, according to HaberTurk, search and rescue workers were combing through the wreckage of two damaged buildings that had collapsed on top of some parked cars, trapping three persons.
At a press conference, Mr. Sezer announced that search and rescue teams had been sent to five different buildings.
