The municipality of Gemeente Putten with the aid of the Architectural firm Atelier Dutch (Putten, Gelderland) and the engineering consulting firm Royal HaskoningDHV has developed a 3D-printed fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) bridge. The bridge was installed and inaugurated in April 2024.
The initial idea was to create two pedestrian bridges to connect an existing wooded area with a new housing development, Rimpeler, which comprises approximately 350 homes. The engineering company, which has been exploring 3D-printed bridges for several years, saw this as a chance to build one using these advanced fabrication methods.
Specifically, the final product is made of 70% industrial waste (PET-G) and 30% glass fiber, printed using CEAD’s 3D printing. Atelier Dutch designed the bridge's complex 3D-printed handrail. The most important is that the bridge is sustainable because of its ability to be recycled at the end of its lifespan. The material can be shredded and reprinted, as this material can be used again for boat molds and other uses. Moreover, its lightweight nature makes it easy to transport.
In all, considering the future goals, they include the scaling up of the 3D-printed bridge construction, especially with the availability of larger printers.
