Mark Koelling Receives Distinguished Service Award Sponsored

Mark Koelling, PE is one of this year's recipients of the Distinguished Services Awards from the ASCE Seattle Section Geotechnical Group and Seattle Geo-Institute Chapter.

The ASCE Seattle Section Geotechnical Group and Seattle Geo-Institute Chapter held, for the 34th consecutive year, its annual Spring Seminar at the University of Washington on April 22, 2017. This year's seminar was on Ground Improvement. The Geotechnical Group in Seattle has a rich legacy of activity that dates back 40 years to the late 1970's, with early involvement and speaking from Ralph Peck, Stan Wilson, Bill Shannon, and Frank Pita. More recently, Professor Bob Holtz of the University of Washington has been actively involved with the Chapter. As part of the proceedings, individuals have been recognized for Distinguished Services Awards. These awards are presented for "outstanding volunteer efforts resulting in the growth and continued strength of the Geotechnical Group".

Koelling was recognized by his peers for his 30 years of service to the industry in Seattle and throughout the Northwest. He started Hayward Baker's Seattle office in 1987. Chapter committee members and past presidents offered that Koelling has not only provided input for Ground Improvement methods, specifications, and advancements to the industry over the years, but has also been available for speaking engagements for the Chapter, some of them requiring last minute provision. In receiving his award, Koelling stated that he was gratified by the recognition and pleased to have seen the growth of Ground Improvement in the Northwest over the past several decades.

Mark Koelling has 44 years of geotechnical consulting and contracting experience. For the past 35 years, he has been employed by HBI in the ground improvement industry in the US. Of this time, the last 30 years have been spent in the Seattle area. Previously, he has worked for two geotechnical consulting firms, Dames & Moore and Law Engineering in the 1970's. From 2011 to 2013 he worked for Keller Ground Engineering in New Zealand and Australia as a Senior Engineer.
