A planning permission to build a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists at the Royal Victoria Dock in East London has been submitted by a partnership. The bridge is part of the £5bn regeneration of Silvertown, which is being led by the Silvertown Partnership, a collaboration between Lendlease and Starwood Capital.
The bridge is designed to be fully accessible and it will be funded by a £233m loan from Homes England. The Mayor of London-supported development is expected to provide around 6,500 new homes, half of which will be affordable housing, and a new center for the Royal Docks. The anticipated contribution of the development to London's economy is estimated to range from £76m-£90m annually, with the greater share expected to benefit the Newham area.
The newly proposed bridge will link the ExCel centre and Custom House station, located on the northern side of the dock, to Silvertown's Millennium Mills. It is designed to open at its mid-point for large vessels to pass and will be a key part of the regeneration project, making the Royal Docks a more desirable place to live and work.
