Ireland is now home to the world’s first 3D-printed concrete social housing project—a row of three three-bedroom homes located in Grange Close, Dundalk, County Louth. The 330-square-meter development was a joint effort between Louth County Council, 3D printing specialist Harcourt Technologies (HTL.tech), and construction materials provider Roadstone. Utilizing a construction printer manufactured by Danish company Cobod, the entire process, from initial site preparation to handing over the keys, was completed in 132 days—35% faster than the typical 203 days required with conventional construction methods.
The walls of the houses were printed in just 12 days, which included time for setting up and dismantling the printer, while the full structural build was finalized in 18 days. The load-bearing wall system adheres to the Eurocode 6 masonry standard, featuring two 10-centimeter-thick outer layers separated by a 150-millimeter cavity. No columns or reinforcement were required.
Approximately 90 cubic meters of C30/37-EN206-compliant concrete, with a compression strength of 47 MPa, were used to complete the project. Additionally, the structure meets the ISO/ASTM 52939:2023 additive manufacturing standard, which is officially adopted in Ireland. Justin Kinsella, director of HTL.tech, emphasized that the Cobod printer enabled the team to “set new industry benchmarks while providing a rapid, efficient method to produce high-quality and sustainable housing.” In recognition of its innovation, HTL.tech was honored with the Standards Innovation Award by the National Standards Authority of Ireland in October.
