The ten-foot thick foundation mat for Comcast’s new Innovation and Technology Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was successfully poured on Saturday. Concrete contractor B. Pietrini & Sons started pouring the foundation around 1 a.m on Saturday and finished roughly twelve hours later. The contractor coordinated 50 concrete trucks making over 400 deliveries to the jobsite on Saturday morning making the building’s foundation one of the largest concrete pours in Philadelphia history.
Now that the foundation has been completed, work will begin on the building’s core structure. The core structure will be completed in 16 months, and the skyscraper is expected to open in 2018. The $1.2 billion Comcast Innovation and Technology center is being built next to the Comcast Center, which is Comcast’s headquarters and Philadelphia’s tallest building. The Innovation and Technology Center will rise 150 feet taller than its neighbor and become the eighth tallest building in the United States. The building, designed by Fosters + Partners, is expected to receive LEED Platinum Certification. In addition to office space, the Innovation and Technology Center will also have a hotel and three television studios. NBC10 Philadelphia and Telemundo Philadelphia have confirmed they will move into the new studios when they open. According to Comcast, the new building will create 20,000 temporary jobs during construction, 4,000 new jobs within the Commonwealth, and 2,800 new permanent jobs in the city.
