A temporary bamboo support collapsed at an under-construction bridge on Kailash Road in Valsad on Wednesday morning, injuring five workers. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. when scaffolding between two bridge pillars over the Auranga River gave way during lifting and levelling work.
Fire and police teams quickly reached the site, rescued all the injured workers, and took them to hospital. Officials confirmed that no one was trapped under the debris. Most of the workers are stable, though one remains in serious condition.
District officials said the collapse was caused by a load imbalance after a jack slipped, likely due to human error. The bridge is a ₹42-crore project scheduled for completion next year. Construction has been temporarily shifted to manual work.
Authorities have ordered a detailed investigation, with senior engineers asked to submit a report within two days. Traffic was diverted near the site to avoid congestion. Officials warned that strict action will be taken if contractor negligence is established.
