Philadelphia officials stated on Sunday morning that a section of northbound I-95 in Philadelphia collapsed following a fire that erupted underneath the highway caused by a tanker truck. No injuries have been reported thus far.
During a news conference, Derek Bowmer, battalion chief for the Philadelphia Fire Department, mentioned that the southbound side was also affected by the intense fire. The incident involved explosions resulting from potential fuel or gas line damage due to the accident.
Firefighters are currently working to extinguish the blaze. Visual evidence captured thick smoke emanating from the interstate. The mayor's office confirmed that a large tanker truck fire caused the collapse and that the fire is now under control. The city's Office of Emergency Management acknowledged that the situation would require significant efforts and time to address.
It was stressed that the closure of I-95 in both directions would have a lasting impact on the community. The fire is being investigated by the fire marshal and other agencies. The Coast Guard is monitoring the incident for potential water pollution. Although there was a sheen on the water, it appeared to be contained within the cove, and cleanup efforts were primarily focused on land.
The water quality of the city's drinking water remains unaffected. Mayor Jim Kenney expressed gratitude to the first responders and advised people to avoid the area while alternative routes were being planned. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has been briefed on the collapse and is coordinating with various agencies.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg offered assistance from the US Department of Transportation for recovery and reconstruction efforts. Interstate 95 spans from Maine to Florida, running from north to south.
