Delhi, India: At least 11 fatalities in residential building collapse

At least 11 people, including several members of the same family, have died after a residential building collapsed in Delhi, India, according to multiple reports. Surveillance footage from a nearby property captured the moment of the collapse, sending a dense cloud of dust into the air.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. Reports indicate that 22 people were inside the building at the time. Emergency responders and local volunteers worked through the night to search for survivors, using cranes and thermal cameras to locate those trapped beneath the debris.

A man who lost two nephews in the collapse said the building was eight to ten years old and undergoing pillar repairs when the foundation gave way. Another resident expressed frustration over previously ignored safety concerns, while a nearby witness described the moment as resembling the motion of an earthquake.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi stated that the four-story building did not meet required structural safety standards. Officials also warned that other nearby buildings may be unsafe. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed his condolences in a post on X on April 19, saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and that the local government was providing assistance to those affected.
