Bridge collapse in Gujarat: at least 10 people swept away

A bridge, located in the Vastadi region of Gujarat's Surendranagar district, collapsed on September 24, resulting in a tragic incident with several vehicles falling into the river below. Four people have been successfully rescued; early reports said that approximately ten people were swept away. Currently, rescue teams are working to save at least six people who are still missing.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the bridge collapsed when a dump truck attempted to cross it. According to KC Sampath, the District Collector, the bridge was a four-decade-old structure that linked the National Highway to Chura. To ensure public safety, authorities had restricted the use of the bridge for heavy vehicles.

As confirmed by the District Collector, the responsibility for the bridge has been transferred to the Roads and Buildings Department, which has been approved to begin the construction of a new and safe structure. 

Videos that capture the incident, showing a large truck stranded in the center of the canal, have gone viral.
