An 11-story building collapsed in Kentucky: at least two workers are dead

An 11-story building in Kentucky collapsed this week, leading to the tragic deaths of two workers who were trapped under concrete and steel. A multi-day rescue effort ensued in an attempt to save them. The collapse occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while the men were working inside the Martin Mine Prep Plant. The cause of the collapse is now under investigation.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear disclosed on Friday that both workers, who were trapped inside a coal preparation plant in Martin County, had lost their lives. Martin County is situated near the state line with West Virginia, approximately 150 miles southeast of Lexington.

Governor Beshear revealed that one of the workers, Billy Ray Daniels, passed away on Wednesday, and intensive rescue operations continued throughout the week with the hope of saving the other worker, Alvin Nees. Governor Beshear expressed his sorrow on a social media platform, stating, "This is a heartbreaking situation, and I hope everyone will join Britainy and me in praying for the families of these two workers and this entire community."

During a news conference, Martin County Judge Executive Dr. Lon Lafferty announced on Friday that both Nees and Daniels' bodies had been located. He acknowledged that this outcome was not the one they had wished for, emphasizing the grim and challenging nature of the situation.
