A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Assam in northeastern India on Sunday, shaking large parts of the region, officials reported. No damage was immediately reported.
According to India’s National Center for Seismology, the tremor originated near Udalguri at a depth of about 5 kilometers. In Guwahati, the state capital, residents fled their homes in alarm.
Northern India lies on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate, giving rise to the Himalayas. As a result, the region is highly prone to earthquakes.
