- Description
- This paper describes an application of rigid block limit analysis to masonry shear walls with openings supported
by experimental investigation. A simplified micro-modelling approach was used to develop the model, based on
the idealization of masonry units and joints with rigid blocks separated by contact interfaces. To characterize the
behaviour at interfaces, crushing and sliding failure were considered. For sliding, different flow rules were used,
including associative and non-associative friction laws. The limit analysis problem was formulated and solved by
means of linear programming. To solve the limit analysis problem a computer program was developed. To
evaluate the accuracy of the used modelling procedure, the rigid block model of the perforated shear walls was
validated against experimental tests and a sensitivity analysis was carried out to assess the influence of various
parameters and modelling assumptions on the predicted response.
