Charges were filed Monday against the man responsible for the failed building demolition that lead to the death of six people in an adjacent building. The collapse occurred on June 5, 2013 in the Center City area of Philadelphia. In addition to the six murder charges, the contractor is also facing six manslaughter and six reckless endangerment charges. The collapse is still under investigation, but it is believed that Griffin Campbell, the lead contractor, is responsible for the collapse and related deaths.

The U.S. Travel Association held its inaugural conference in Washington D.C last week. The focus of the event, referred to as “Connecting America Through Travel, was to raise awareness to the fact that a lack of infrastructure spending in the United States is leading many tourists to visit other countries. Representatives of the association cite other countries’ high-speed rail and efficient airports as two main reasons why the United States is in danger of falling further behind. They warn that this has far reaching effects on the country that include not only being a less desirable travel destination, but also being less competitive in the global marketplace.

$500 Million for Typhoon Rebuilding

World Bank Group is providing the Filipino government with a $500 million emergency loan to help rebuild the devastated country. They will also provide a cash transfer to help clean up from the disaster and build temporary shelters. The World Bank Group has sent a technical team to the Philippines to assess the damage and determine the best path to rebuild. The team will first determine a reconstruction plan for the country, and then they will set it into place.

Two people are dead and up to 40 people were trapped on Tuesday afternoon when a section of a shopping mall under construction collapsed in South Africa. Old Bay Bridge Demolition Underway

Workers began tearing down the east span of the old Bay Bridge on Tuesday, nearly two months after the new bridge opened.  The demolition of the old bridge is expected to be a long, tedious process.  Construction workers will have to dismantle the bridge piece by piece.  According to one of the California Department of Transportation’s bridge engineers,  “the old bridge is the world’s largest armed bow and arrow. We have to de-string it very carefully or it will go boom.”  The $281 million demolition project is expected to take three years to complete.  This cost was already incorporated into the $6.4 billion price tag for the new bridge.  The 1.97 mile long east span opened in 1936 and is made of almost 59,000 tons of steel and 245,000 tons of concrete.  The majority of the steel will be recycled or reused, but some will be saved for a new park commemorating the old bridge.  The following link contains a great slideshow of construction crews beginning the demolition of  the bridge.

Frequency Response Analysis with DIANA

The dynamic analysis of dam-fluid-foundation interaction is of vital importance in engineering practice. Westergaard originally developed analytical expressions to compute the hydrodynamic pressure on a dam with vertical upstream face subjected to seismic ground motions. With advances in computer technology and the advent of finite element analysis, the numerical analysis of dams, with software such as DIANA, has become easier and faster.

This paper highlights the capabilities of DIANA to consider the effects of fluid compressibility and foundation flexibility. This is one of a collection of white papers written by staff members at TNO DIANA BV which are available for download on this website.
