The Cleveland National Forest Foundation, a small group of environmental advocates, filed a lawsuit against Caltrans on Wednesday over the plans to expand I-5 in the San Diego area.  The lawsuit claims the freeway expansion would lead to “an enormous surge in greenhouse gas emissions.”  Caltrans Final Environmental Impact Report, which was signed on October 23, 2013, states that the express lanes expansion project is the best way to serve the 300,000 daily trips along the freeway by 2030 as it has the least impact on natural resources, requires fewest property relocations, and has the lowest construction costs.

Westfield Group paid $800 million last week to buy 50% of the retail space in the new World Trade Center.  The company had previously purchased the other 50% of space for $600 million two years ago.  Westfield Group is a mall developer and operator and currently own shopping areas in London, San Fransisco, and Los Angeles.  The New York and New Jersey Port Authority owns the 16-acre World Trade Center site, and it will use part of the $1.4 billion in revenue from the sales to fund infrastructure in the region.  According to Port Authoirty chairman David Samson, Westfield’s investment will allow the Port authority to “refocus agency resources on our core transportation mission.”  No specific announcements have been made about where this funding will be used.

1,000 Foot Bay Front Tower in Miami Proposed

In late November, a Miami developer announced his plans for an observation and amusement tower on the Miami bay front. The tower, referred to as the SkyRise Miami tower, would be 1,000 feet tall and include dining, observation decks, a ballroom and an assortment of amusement attractions. The building is designed as two structures attached at the top through a curve giving it a hairpin-like appearance. This unique design, which is open in the middle, allows the structure to withstand hurricane force wind.

The federal Surface Transportation Board rejected the California High Speed Rail Authority’s approval request for a 114-mile section of the rail line between Fresno and Bakersfield on Wednesday.  The board is demanding an extensive environmental review before the approval will be granted.  Currently, only 28 miles of the track have environmental approval.  Officials from the rail authority are brushing off the ruling as nothing more than a minor setback and that the media is misreporting its significance. However, others see it as another major delay in an already over-budget and slow moving project.

Minnesota Vikings Break Ground on New Stadium

The Minnesota Vikings broke ground on Tuesday on the new $975 million Vikings Stadium. The stadium will be built by Mortenson Construction and Thor Construction and will replace the aging Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis that was built in 1982. The 65,000 seat, 1.7 million square foot facility will be finished in July 2016. It is expected to take 4.3 million work hours from over 7500 workers. The Vikings and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) will require 11% of the construction contracts for the project to be awarded to women, and 9% of the contracts to be awarded to minority-owned construction companies. On May 10, 2012, a bill was passed to fund the stadium and states the Minnesota Vikings will pay $477 million, the state of Minnesota will pay $348 million, and $150 million will be covered by a hospitality tax in Minneapolis.

Silo Collapse in Roy, Washington

A silo containing many tons of grain collapsed Monday evening at Wilcox Farms in Roy, Washington. One man is believed to be trapped under as much as 50 tons of corn and is presumed dead. A Federal Emergency Management Agency engineer was on site to assess the damage and determine whether it was safe to proceed with search efforts, but could not confirm the safety of the building. The collapse leaked tons of corn into an office and electrical area where the worker was located. The cause of collapse has still yet to be determined. Brazil Stadium Collapse Kills Two

Two people died and one was injured last week when part of the Sao Paulo Stadium in Brazil collapsed.  The stadium is one of the 12 venues that will be used for this summer’s World Cup and is scheduled to host the opening match of the tournament.  The two workers died when a crane collapsed above their vehicle. Luckily, the crane collapse occurred at lunchtime and prevented the death toll from being any worse.  Images of the damage show a collapsed 500-ton metal structure that supported the stadium’s canopy. The failure occurred when the structure was struck by a crane.  As a result of the accident, construction has been suspended for 30 days and this will further cast a shadow on Brazil’s preparations for the World Cup.
