New design to make bridge spans longer

Longer bridge spans will be achieved in the future by the utilization of new bridge forms.

The Chacao Bridge is an emblematic project for the country. It is expected to improve quality of life, commerce and tourism for the Island of Chiloe, which will be united with mainland Chile for the first time.

Such a project is ‘feasible’ and has ‘exceptional’ business potential, says top architect

The spectacular footpath is 488 meters (1,601 feet) long, breaking the previous record by 58 m (191 feet)

On Saturday, July 29th, the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge opened to the public in Switzerland. Having a length of 1621 feet, a width of just over two-feet and rising as high as 279 feet, the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge crosses the valley between the towns of Grächen in the north and Zermatt in the south.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was completed in 2013, took 12 years to build and cost $6.4 billion. It is the largest and most ambitious public works project in California history, in large part because it is designed to withstand a massive earthquake. Since shortly before its completion, however, the bridge has been plagued with questions about its sturdiness.

Last week Caltrans revealed that 120 of the 400 galvanized steel rods that anchor the bridges tower to its foundation are in leaky sleeves flooded with saltwater.   This presents a key vulnerability in the event of a large earthquake.
