It was the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. in more than a decade spun, making landfall in Texas. Harvey developed from a tropical wave to a Category 4 storm, coming ashore on August 25th and causing historic flooding. At peak intensity, the hurricane’s wind speed reached 130 mph. The Fehmarnbelt fixed link in the Baltic Sea will connect the Danish island of Lolland with Germany's Fehmarn island and is expected to boost transportation between central Europe and Scandinavia. Spanning 17.6 km, it will be by far the world’s longest road and rail immersed tube tunnel (IMT), comprising of a four-lane motorway and a double-track railway. The Fehmarnbelt link will cut journeys across the sea from 45 minutes to about 10 by car and 7 by train.

In 2011, Covestro, a subsidiary of the German chemical giant Bayer built a pipeline to transport carbon monoxide from one plant to another. It is still not in operation though as the project remains highly controversial, with the company pointing out its ‘economic meaningfulness necessity’ and locals and environmentalists expressing fears concerning public safety.

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP), also called the South–North Water Transfer Project, is an ongoing Chinese effort to channel 45 billion m3 of water annually from the Yangtze River in southern China to the country's less fertile northern regions, through three canal systems. The SNWDP, which has up to now cost more than $79 billion, is the largest and longest water diversion project in the world, and benefits the greatest number of people and regions.

The first major combined bridge and tunnel sea-crossing project in China is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. Consisting of three cable-stayed bridges and one 6-km sea crossing tunnel, it will have a total length of 55 km. It will be the world’s longest sea bridge and will link three cities in China's Pearl River Delta — creating one mega-city of 42 million people and slashing travel time between Hong Kong and Chinese city Zhuhai from three hours to just 30 minutes. 

On Saturday, July 29th, the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge opened to the public in Switzerland. Having a length of 1621 feet, a width of just over two-feet and rising as high as 279 feet, the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge crosses the valley between the towns of Grächen in the north and Zermatt in the south.

The Russian Duma recently approved the bill (in its final form) concerning Moscow’s residential face-lift. Up to 7,900 aging apartment blocks (a full 10% of the city’s housing) is set to be torn down and replaced with high-rise apartments. Most of them are the so-called “Khrushchevka” flats (after the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev), prefabricated five-story buildings, built during the Soviet housing boom of the 1950s and 1960s. These are apartments with thin walls, low ceilings and generally poor architectural design. The project, which is considered one of the largest urban resettlement programs in history as 1.6 million people will be resettled, is estimated to cost around 300 billion rubles ($5.3 billion) over three years. However, officials project the longer-term cost of relocating and rehousing the residents over 20 years will be at least $53 billion.
