In the evening of the 9th of May, a large crawler crane collapsed in Varese, Italy while lifting a large section of a new viaduct at the Arcisate Stabio railway yards. The piece of concrete bridge was never put into place, as the Vernazza-owned crane lost its stability and overturned, dumping its load on the ground. Although several people were on site watching the operation, luckily no one was injured. The crane’s operator is also safe, as he managed to get out of the cabin in time, jumping from a height of nearly three meters.

Super Crane Arrives in New York

The “I Lift NY” floating super crane arrived at the Tappan Zee Bridge this week and yesterday had to do the limbo to travel to the other side of the bridge. The crane made its way up the Hudson River from Jersey City on Monday after completing its journey from San Francisco through the Panama Canal earlier this month. Around 5 pm yesterday, a tugboat helped guide the crane north underneath the existing bridge and to the location where the new bridge is currently under construction. Workers on site prepared for the crane's arrival by removing the existing bridge’s navigation light from under the bridge to give the crane a little more clearance. The barge carrying the crane was also filled with water to make it ride lower in the water. The crane was able to squeeze under the existing bridge without any problems and will now be anchored on the other side for the next couple of years. It uses special steel anchors, called spuds that are planted in the river bottom to keep from moving.

Video: Double Crane Collapse in Venezuela

The video below shows two cranes collapsing while attempting to move a 60-ton truss beam during the construction of a train station in Caracas, Venezuela.  The two crane operators survived the fall but were injured during the incident occurring on December 6th.  According to El Universal, a Caracas newspaper, the crane operators were attempting a dangerous maneuver, but one of them shouted that he was “doing an excellent job” immediately before the collapse.  The construction company responsible is currently investigating the cause of the incident.  The two five axle all terrain cranes were 100 ton Liebherr LTM1100-5 models, and the collapse was reportedly caused by one of the crane’s outriggers sinking into the ground and destabilizing the crane.  The crane that fell down the access shaft crashed into a diesel storage tank causing a leak that shut down the adjacent road for a few hours.
